    • identify when Opal meets Gloria Dump.
    • describe how Opal plans to get the collar and leash from the pet store.
      • She asks Otis, who works at the pet store, to give her a job.  Otis doesn’t want to because Gertrude the parrot doesn’t like dogs.  When Winn Dixie shows he can get along with Gertrude, Otis hires Opal.
    • describe why Opal told Gloria, someone she barely knows, everything about herself.
      • At the beginning of the book, Opal says she is lonely and doesn’t have any friends.  Gloria acts kindly toward Opal and invites Opal to tell her “everything”.  This friendliness makes Opal feel like she has a real and true friend.
